Homestead Detention Camp

In collaboration with Seeds of Resistance, the American Friends Service Committee of Florida, and Earthjustice, I co-direct (with Guadalupe de la Cruz) a project documenting spatial and environmental violence at the Homestead Temporary Shelter, which was the largest detention camp for migrant children in the U.S. between 2016 and 2019. Our research found that detained children were exposed to toxic waste from a nearby military Superfund site and to levels of noise associated with developmental harm from the adjacent military base runway. Our report was used by organizers in their successful campaign to shut down the facility in 2019 and keep it closed in 2021.
